Paul Merson has voiced his concern at Liverpool for not doing enough to address their defence during the summer transfer window.

Sky Sports pundit Merson believes Jurgen Klopp did well to balance the books, but could have added more defensive quality to the Reds’ squad and he us not convinced by Georginio Wijnaldum.

Klopp made six summer signings, including three defensive additions in goalkeeper Loris Karius, and centre-backs Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip.

The Merseyside club also sold senior players such as Martin Skrtel, Joe Allen and Christian Benteke, but former Arsenal man Merson believes Klopp could have added more defensive cover as he graded the club on their summer window.

“Sadio Mane gives Liverpool pace in attack,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column. “But you look at Georginio Wijnaldum’s record at Newcastle and he was fine at home, but you never heard from him on the road. That is a concern.

“They got good deals for Benteke, Ibe and others and they have balanced their books, but they didn’t do enough to address their defence and that’s why they get a C.”

Klopp took charge of the Reds’ in October, as he guided the club to a League Cup and Europa League final, with Manchester City and Sevilla winning the encounters.

Liverpool currently sit in 11th in the Premier League table this season having conceded six goals in three games, with their sole 4-3 victory coming on the opening day away at Arsenal.
