Paul Merson has backed Liverpool to beat Watford at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, but claims their defence will stop them from winning the title.

Sky Sports pundit Merson has predicted the Reds to win 3-1 on home soil and continue their winning run in all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Crystal Palace 4-2 in their last league encounter, and have kept just one clean sheet in the league this season.

This concerned former Arsenal and Aston Villa midfielder Merson, who believes they need to change their ways, if they are to lift their maiden Premier League title.

“Liverpool have been very good going forward but you need more than that to win a Premier League title,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column. “You can’t be giving away the kind of goals they did against Crystal Palace. If you look at the first goal, you wouldn’t be happy if that happened down the park on a Sunday morning!

“It doesn’t matter how well they’re playing or how much they’re dominating, I just can’t see them keeping clean sheets, and that’s the worry for me. But I don’t see anything but a Liverpool win.”

Klopp’s side are third in the league table with 23 points from ten games, as they have won seven of their last eight games.

The Merseyside club could move top of the table, after the conclusion of the weekend fixtures, as the top three are only separated by goal difference.

Leaders Manchester City host newly-promoted Middlesbrough on Saturday, while Arsenal, who are second welcome bitter rivals Tottenham to the Emirates on Sunday.

In the latest Liverpool team news, Divock Origi starts for the Reds in a possible 4-2-3-1 formation against Watford.
