Paul Merson believes Tottenham must been teams like West Brom if they are to be genuine title contenders.
Sky Sports pundit Merson backed Spurs to beat Tony Pulis’ Albion side 3-0 at the Hawthorns on Saturday, after their impressive 2-0 win over leaders Manchester City prior to the international break.
As a result the north London club ended City’s 100 per cent start to the season and maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson gave his prediction for the weekend clash, as he gave an insight as to why it is such an important fixture for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
“Tottenham are playing very well at the moment and while the Man City result was brilliant, these are the types of games that win you Premier League titles,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column.
“Harry Kane got injured last season you couldn’t see Spurs winning a game for toffee. Now it seems like nothing has changed despite his absence, which is a massive compliment to the other players.
“West Brom have turned the corner but I have been majorly impressed by Tottenham.”
Pochettino’s side are a point behind Pep Guardiola’s side in the league table, with the north London club on 17 points from seven games.
They have won five out of their seven league fixtures this term, drawing two and recording the tightest defence in the league by conceding only three goals.
By contrast their opponents for the weekend are in ninth place, with nine points having registered two wins and three draws.
In other Tottenham team news, Mauricio Pochettino has revealed on Thursday afternoon that this first team player is facing a spell on the sidelines.
