Paul Merson has backed Arsenal to beat north London rivals Tottenham at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
Sky Sports pundit Merson has predicted his former side to prevail as 3-1 winners, in what is expected to be a highly-charged atmosphere.
The Gunners won their midweek Champions League fixture away at Ludogorets, while Mauricio Pochettino’s side were beaten at Wembley by German outfit Bayer Leverkusen.
Former Gunners midfielder Merson provided a damming verdict on Spurs’ Wembley performance, as he explained why he thinks Arsene Wenger’s team will win at the weekend.
“If Tottenham play like they did in the Champions League in midweek then you can’t see anything but an Arsenal win,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column. “It was probably their worst-ever performance under Mauricio Pochettino.
“If Arsenal watched that they’ll be thinking they’ve just got to turn up and get the three points, but of course it doesn’t work like that.
“That being said, though, I’m still going to go for the Gunners to win this game. If they’re at it straight away then I don’t see Tottenham being able to live with them. Form does go out the window for a game like this but six games without a win is a lot for Spurs and their confidence doesn’t look great.”
Despite the midweek defeat, Spurs are still the only unbeaten team in the league this season, as they now face their bitter rivals.
Wenger’s men are second in the league table with 23 points from ten games, while Tottenham are fifth with 20 points.
In other Tottenham team news, Jan Vertonghen and Santi Cazorla have been axed in this Spurs and Arsenal combined XI.
