Paul Merson has tipped Tottenham to overcome Southampton in their Premier League meeting at St. Mary’s.

Spurs travel to Southampton next Wednesday for the league clash and will be looking to make it three consecutive wins after victories over Burnley and Hull.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are currently fifth-placed in the league table and are just a point behind Arsenal in fourth.

The north London club are 10 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea and Sky Sports pundit Merson believes that Spurs will be in the mix for the title if they come through a difficult set of fixtures in the next few weeks.

“Spurs have got a hard Christmas schedule. If they come through this period with some positive results, they will be well in the mix,” Merson wrote on the Sky Sports website. “I fancy Spurs to win at St. Mary’s draws are simply no good to them.”

Merson has predicted Spurs to record a narrow 2-1 away victory against Southampton.

Claude Puel’s Southampton are set to be a huge test as they sit seventh in the league and have lost just one of their eight home matches this season.

Spurs still have aspirations of competing for the title this season and face games against Watford and Chelsea after the Southampton clash.

Pochettino’s side have lost just two of their 17 Premier League games this season and have proven difficult to beat, but will need to be more ruthless if they are to win the title.

The Argentinian manager will be lining up against the team he left to join Spurs in 2014.

In other Tottenham news, the club’s senior player would be better off quitting.
