Peter Withe has labelled Aston Villa’s attacking duo Rudy Gestede and Jonathan Kodjia as a “perfect” combination.
Holte-End hero Withe backed the club’s attackers to frighten the opposition, as the former striker praised the impact Benin forward Gestede has had on the team this season.
Gestede, 27 has scored three goals in six Championship games this term having found the net on only five occasions during the last campaign where Villa were relegated from the Premier League.
His 26-year-old teammate Kodjia has scored on one occasion in three appearances since his £11 million move from Bristol City in August, a fee which could rise to £15 million, depending on achievements.
Club legend Withe has backed the attacking duo to play an important part in manager Roberto Di Matteo’s promotional push this season.
“I think Rudy is playing his best football now so it’s important to get him back fit,” Withe told the Birmingham Mail. “He’s doing things this season that he wasn’t doing previously – winning headers, getting on the end of passes and scoring goals.
“I think with Kodjia alongside him, Villa have the perfect mix to frighten teams.”
Withe made 233 appearances for Villa scoring 92 goals, including the most famous by netting the winning goal in the 1982 European Cup final against Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.
The Midlands club now lie in 18th place in the Championship with eight points from their opening eight games.
Di Matteo’s side welcome Rafa Benitez’ Newcastle to Villa Park on Saturday evening in an eagerly awaited showdown.
In other Aston Villa team news, Ian Holloway predicts the club’s clash against Newcastle, believes first goal is important.
