Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson believes Arsenal loanee Jack Wilshere could be overlooked by Gareth Southgate for England’s next squad.

Thompson has given his verdicts on the credentials of a handful of young English stars, with Wilshere one of five names alongside Tom Heaton, Nathan Redmond, Ross Barkley and Ben Gibson.

Writing in his Sky Sports column, former Liverpool stalwart Thompson revealed that Wilshere may not have done enough at the start of his season-long loan with Bournemouth to warrant a call-up.

“He’s going to be a difficult one,” Thompson wrote. “We’re talking about players who have impressed for their club, but I’m not sure Wilshere has done enough in that sense.

“I think he’s getting his fitness back but there’s still a question over his form. His fitness is getting there but he’s still not reached the level where he can dominate games.”

Wilshere, who was loaned to Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth as he looks to regain match fitness, has made nine league and cup appearances and has starred in all three of his side’s Premier League wins.

The 24-year-old has 34 England caps to his name after making his debut in 2010 against Hungary, which also made him the 10th youngest England player.

The former Bolton loanee could be recalled by interim boss Southgate, as the Three Lions prepare to face home nation rivals Scotland in Group F of the 2018 World Cup qualifying stages.
