Mauricio Pochettino hailed academy products Cameron Carter-Vickers, Harry Winks and Anton Walkes as “fantastic” in Tottenham’s 5-0 League Cup win over Gillingham.

Pochettino handed debuts to four players in Carter-Vickers, Walkes, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Marcus Edwards on Wednesday night.

Midfielder Winks, 20, also made his first start for the senior team in the third-round tie at White Hart Lane.

Nkoudou was an £11million summer signing from Marseille but the others are all products of Spurs’ increasingly impressive academy, and all thrived on the big stage.

“They play very well, they play with a lot of confidence,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the Express. “I am very happy because if you see the confidence of Carter-Vickers, Harry Winks, Anton Walkes, they were fantastic.

“They come through the academy but they have the quality to impress us and play for the first team.”It’s important for Tottenham and it was fantastic to give the opportunity to play and fantastic experience for them.”

Another academy product Josh Onomah scored his first Spurs goal on Wednesday night as Pochettino made 11 changes from the team that won 1-0 in the Premier League against Sunderland on Sunday.

Onomah repaid his manager’s faith by scoring Spurs’ fourth goal in the emphatic win at White Hart Lane as he was one of two players on the night – along with Vincent Janssen – who netted for the club for the first time.

In other Tottenham news, Pochettino has claimed these two Spurs wonderkids can become great players.
