Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Tottenham youngster Harry Winks is pushing for a first-team spot.
The 20-year-old midfielder has been involved in Spurs’ senior squad this season and has made four appearances across all competitions.
The youngster has risen through the club’s youth teams and has now established himself as a regular in Pochettino’s squad.
Winks is currently battling Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele for a starting position in the midfield anchorman role.
Spurs are blessed with talented central midfielders, but Pochettino feels that Winks is challenging the senior trio.
“Maybe last season there was only him (Dier), [but] this season we want to improve our squad. It’s not a problem,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the Mirror. “Now the players need to feel the competition. There is Wanyama in his position too.
“And don’t forget Harry Winks too, who is coming and pushing a lot from behind. You have to look forward and carry on working.”
Spurs face a busy schedule in the coming weeks and have been dealt a blow, with Dembele facing an extended spell on the sidelines.
Winks could be handed more opportunities as a result and will want to continue impressing boss Pochettino.
He made his full debut in the EFL Cup win against Gillingham in September and lined up alongside fellow youngster Tom Carroll.
The academy graduate has also made substitute appearances in the Premier League and Champions League as his meteoric rise continues.
Spurs face West Brom on Saturday in the Premier League and will hope to continue their unbeaten start to the new campaign.
