Mauricio Pochettino has named four Liverpool fringe players who are ideal potential stand-ins for Tuesday night’s League Cup showdown.
Pochettino takes his Tottenham side to Merseyside on Tuesday night after the clubs drew 1-1 at White Hart Lane in the league back in August.
Liverpool currently sit third in the Premier League table, a point and two places better off than Tottenham.
Both clubs are expected to play weakened line-ups for the fourth-round clash at Anfield but Pochettino has no doubts about the capabilities of the fringe men that Jurgen Klopp can call upon.
“They have a very strong squad,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo. “If (Klopp) plays Mignolet, he’s an international goalkeeper who has only been on the bench in the last few games.
“If he doesn’t play Firmino, he can play Sturridge. If not Coutinho, maybe Wijnaldum. If not Henderson because he’s suspended, he can play Leiva.”
Liverpool are the most free-scoring side in the Premier League and Pochettino is aware they represent an even sterner test than that faced by his side two months ago.
“We were in a different momentum in August,” said the Argentine to the Echo. “Both teams have improved a lot, we’re close in the table.
“We’re involved in the Champions League and that demands a lot of energy. They are in a very good moment, they have one of the best squads in the league.”
In other Tottenham news, Pochettino has revealed a Spurs playmaker will be sidelined until nearly Christmas.
