Mauricio Pochettino has hailed Tottenham teenage sensations Marcus Edwards and Cameron Carter-Vickers as having the potential to become great players.

The youthful duo are in line to play for Spurs in their  EFL Cup clash against Gillingham on Wednesday.

Manager Pochettino is expected to make a number of changes to his regular side against the League One club, which will give opportunities to the latest crop of emerging White Hart Lane stars.

Playmaker Edwards, 17, and centre-back Carter-Vickers, 18, are set to be involved in the matchday squad against Gillingham in what should provide an exciting glimpse into the future for the Tottenham faithful.

Edwards has yet to make his first-team debut but is set for a place on the bench at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night.

“He [Edwards] is a very good prospect and, potentially, he can be a top player but we need to be patient and tell him that he has a lot of talent, enough talent to be a top player, a great player but now it’s how he builds his future, that’s very important,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the Telegraph. “And it’s our responsibility to tell him.”

Pochettino rates Carter-Vickers, who has been on the substitutes’ bench in the Premier League this season, similarly highly.

“I already told you that, for me, he can be one of the best centre-backs in England in the future,” said former central defender Pochettino, also to the Telegraph. “He has a strong mentality, quality, all the qualities for playing centre-back.

““Does he remind me of myself? No, he is better than me! I said one of the best centre-backs in England.”

Spurs have earned a reputation for producing and developing some of the best young talents in England in recent seasons.

Kane, Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason, Tom Carroll, Josh Onomah, Danny Rose and Crystal Palace summer signing Andros Townsend all graduated from the Tottenham academy into the first-team squad, while Eric Dier and Dele Alli have taken huge strides in a very short time at White Hart Lane.
