Joey Barton released a statement on his Twitter page on Thursday evening following bust up reports – and Rangers fans have responded with mixed reactions on the social media site.
The Scottish Sun claimed on Thursday that the 34-year-old had been “banished” from the club’s Murray Park training headquarters and wouldn’t feature in the weekend’s clash against Ross County.
The experienced midfielder took to his personal account on the same day, claiming that he had the club’s best interest at heart.
Rangers fans took to Twitter following the statement and some aired their disappointment that the controversial midfielder was already causing trouble following his move in the summer.
Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Barton was involved in Rangers’ 5-1 humiliating defeat suffered at the hands of fierce rivals Celtic on Saturday, starting the match and playing the full 90 minutes.
Following his free transfer from Burnley in the summer, the outspoken midfielder has featured in eight encounters for Mark Warburton’s side.
However, controversy seems to follow Barton around, with reports of trouble caused at Manchester City, Newcastle and QPR.
Rangers have impressed in their return to the Scottish Premiership despite the Celtic defeat, with the side currently sat in third place after five games.
They will now turn their attentions to Ross County on the weekend, who sit in fourth place.
