Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has joked that he is interested in signing Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo this summer – and fans on Twitter have seen the funny side.

The Portuguese is expected to bring in a number of experienced players this summer as he continues his overhaul of the first-team squad, but he has joked that the world-class duo are on his shortlist.

He said, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account on Friday: “Bruno Alves is a fantastic player. I would like to sign him, Ronaldo and Messi.”

Caixinha was responding to reports that the Scottish club were looking to sign 35-year-old defender Bruno Alves.

The Scottish Sun claim that the Portuguese international has already agreed to become Caixinha’s first signing at Ibrox this summer, although negotiations are still ongoing with his current club Cagliari.

But his tongue-in-cheek declaration of his interest in the two Champions League mainstays was met with the intended humour from Rangers fans.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The majority of Rangers fans seemed pleased to be able to share a laugh at their manager’s comments, particularly after a disappointing season at Ibrox.

They Glasgow giants have been left in third place in the Scottish Premiership this term, trailing champions Celtic by 39 points, and rivals Aberdeen by nine points.

It is safe to say that Champions League mainstays Ronaldo and Messi, who have scored a combined 1041 career goals, are not likely to be arriving through the door at Ibrox anytime soon.

In other Rangers transfer news, the club are keen to tie up a deal for a creative spark this week.
