Joey Barton’s future at Rangers is in serious jeopardy after it was revealed that he has had his suspension extended for another week by the Ibrox club.
The BBC reported on Sunday morning that Barton, 34, was due to return to the club on Monday following a dressing-room disagreement.
However, the club announced that his suspension has been extended for another week and that he is not welcome back at the club in the meantime.
“Joey Barton has been informed that his suspension by the club has been extended by one week,” Rangers said.
“This is part of a formal disciplinary procedure and Joey has been instructed not return to Ibrox or Auchenhowie until further notice.”
Last week Barton was charged by the Scottish FA with breaking rules relating to gambling on football matches. He has until Wednesday to respond to the charges.
Rangers fans are understandably frustrated by the latest twist in the Barton saga, but the majority are on the combative midfielder’s side, although they’re now resigned to losing him.
Here are a selection of Tweets immediately following the news.
Andy Newport, a sports reporter for Press Association Scotland, tweeted to say that Barton expects his contract to be paid in full before he moves on.
