Rangers tried to sign the 13-year-old wonderkid who has taken social media by storm from under the noses of Celtic, according to the coach who developed him.

Karamoko Dembele burst on to the scene when a highlight video of him in action at a youth tournament for the Hoops went viral.

The football prodigy then went on to break the Internet after making his debut for Celtic’s Under-20s development side against Hearts on Monday night.

David Feeney – who worked with Dembele for four years at Park Villa football development in Glasgow before he joined Celtic – revealed his talent is so prodigious, Rangers tried to prise him away from their city rivals.

“Even though he was tied with with Celtic and ourselves and Rangers knew that, they still wanted to see him for themselves,” Feeney said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“We were able to get a match at Murray Park and the Rangers staff were astounded with what he was able to do. They were trying to see how good he was.

Feeney is in no doubt Dembele, who was handed his chance for Celtic’s development side on Monday due to the unavailability of a number of regulars, has the potential to be a superstar.

“I think he is very similar to Lionel Messi, if he has the right guidance and stays at Celtic then the sky is the limit for him,” he added to the Daily Record.

“I honestly believe he can go all the way and be a great player. I was astounded by him, he’s a fantastic talent.

“I would speak about him to anyone who would listen, he’s the best young player I have ever worked with. No one is in his league.”
