Real Madrid are still interested in signing David de Gea next summer, Football Insider sources understand.

The Spanish giants will continue to monitor the goalkeeper this season even though he signed a new Manchester United contract last Friday.

De Gea was recalled to the United team for their 3-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday as Louis van Gaal immediately repaid the Spaniard’s decision to commit to the club beyond 2016, when his previous deal was due to expire.

But Spanish sources have told Football Insider that Real have not abandoned hope of prising the 24-year-old from Old Trafford and believe a deal could even be possible at the end of the season.

They had agreed a £29million deal for De Gea, with Keylor Navas moving the other way, on the final day of the transfer window only for the move to collapse because the paperwork was not submitted to league officials on time.

De Gea accepted United’s explanation that the blame rested with Real and made a dramatic turnaround by signing a new four-year contract with the option of a fifth year.

It is not yet known if the new deal includes a release clause, which would allow a buyer to sign the player for a specified fee and at a specified time.
