Liverpool can win the Premier League next season if they sign a dominant centre-back, according to Jamie Redknapp.

The former Anfield midfielder highlighted the defence as the team’s principal weakness in the wake of their 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham on Saturday night.

The result cements Spurs’ position of second in the table, with Liverpool a distant 21 points behind leaders Leicester with a game in hand.

Redknapp was particularly impressed by the performance against high-flying Spurs of Dejan Lovren, who was partnered in the centre of defence by Mamadou Sakho.

Asked if Liverpool can win the league next season, the Sky Sports pundit believes Jurgen Klopp’s team needs a player at the back who is commanding and authoritative.

“I think they need to sort out the defence,” he told Sky Sports in the aftermath of Liverpool’s match on Saturday night. “They have to somehow find a dominant centre-back. It is a major problem for them.

“Going forward they have got quality in their team.”

The Merseysiders have already landed Schalke centre-half Joel Matip, who will move on a free transfer in the summer.

In other Liverpool news, the Merseysiders are eyeing a summer swoop for a defender dubbed a potential once-in-a-hundred player by his manager.
