Garry Monk is fighting for his future as Leeds manager, according to a reliable journalist.

Yorkshire Evening Post correspondent Phil Hay has claimed that the club’s Championship clash against Blackburn on Tuesday is a “must-win” match for the increasingly under pressure Monk.

Leeds’ 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield on Saturday was their fourth from six league matches this season and has left them languishing third from bottom and in the relegation zone.

Monk, who succeeded previous boss Steve Evans in the summer, was tetchy in the aftermath of the west Yorkshire derby when he was asked about what owner Massimo Cellino thought of his spell in charge to date amid growing speculation about his future.

“It seems harsh for Garry Monk to have to answer those questions so early in his career,” Hay told the Yorkshire Evening Post in his video verdict of their weekend defeat. “In reality, if you look at the history here, and if you look at previous head coaches, there have been consequences in the past for patches of poor, short-term form.

“There is no denying that Leeds have started the season badly and there is no denying that Massimo Cellino is the sort of owner who sacks coaches when things get out of hand or he feels like things are not moving forward.

“If I’m being brutally honest, I don’t see much difference today between that and some of the poorer performances under previous head coaches.

“It is a concern for Garry Monk and, as he said himself afterwards, Blackburn on Tuesday is a must-win. He’s going to have to start getting points on the board, or this is going to start looking relatively serious for him.”

Monk is under fire at Elland Road after taking just four points from his opening six league matches in charge given Cellino’s history of firing the men in the dugout.

During the Italian businessman’s controversial three-year tenure, Leeds have sacked six managers.

Leeds face bottom club Blackburn on Tuesday at Elland Road and they will see it as a good opportunity to reignite their season.

In other Leeds news, Monk has dropped a hint about his future transfer activity in the free agent market.
