Newcastle are not interested in Serbia international Lazar Markovic despite reported interest, according to a reliable journalist.

Football news website Goal claimed that the Championship giants had targeted the 22-year-old to bolster their wing options.

However, The Shields Gazzette’s writer Miles Starforth has revealed via his personal Twitter account that the Magpies have no interest in the Liverpool star, who has been told he can leave Anfield this summer – or Lazio’s Ravel Morrison.

Markovic, who moved to Anfield from Benfica in the summer of 2014 for £21million, has fielded plenty of enquiries from abroad, including a £16million offer to return to Portugal with Sporting Lisbon.

The attacker still has three years left on his Liverpool contract but, after spending last season on loan in Turkey with Fenerbahce, has failed to make a single appearance for the Reds in the new campaign.

Liverpool’s number 50 has been told that he has no future at Anfield, as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to conduct a mini exodus before Wednesday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

Newcastle are desperate to add an attacking option ahead of the transfer deadline and look set to complete the signing of Chelsea’s Christian Atsu. Sky have reported that the player is currently having a medical ahead of a proposed season-long loan.

Manager Rafa Benitez has already made 11 summer signings, taking his spending to over £53million after confirming the addition of Ipswich Town striker Daryl Murphy and Achraf Lazaar.

Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle, Mohamed Diame, Isaac Hayden and DeAndre Yedlin have all joined the Magpies from the Premier League, while Matz Sels, Ciaran Clark, Grant Hanley and Jesus Gamez have also signed for Benitez’s side.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies are unwilling to let this midfielder leave for less than their asking price.
