Aston Villa had a late loan move for striker Jordan Rhodes blocked before the summer transfer deadline, according to a report.
The Daily Star, citing the Sunday People, report that manager Roberto Di Matteo offered Middlesbrough £1million to take the talented youngster on loan.
Rhodes, 26, signed for Boro for a fee of £9million in January and helped Aitor Karanka’s side to promotion, scoring six goals in 18 appearances.
However, despite not establishing himself in the first team this season, the Premier League new boys opted to keep the Scotland international at the Riverside stadium.
Rhodes is yet to make an appearance for Karanka’s side in the Premier League after the Spaniard signed Alvaro Negredo during the summer, pushing Rhodes down the pecking order.
The two clubs did negotiate two deals on deadline day, with Ghana international Albert Adomah making a £5million switch to Villa Park and Villa winger Adama Traore heading the other way.
Di Matteo signed two forwards during the summer transfer window as his club broke the Championship transfer record on two occasions.
Villa signed Ross McCormack for £12million from Fulham and Bristol City frontman Jonathan Kodjia for £15million in a statement of intent for the new Championship campaign.
In other Aston Villa transfer news, the club’s summer signing wants to take responsibility as they aim for a promotion push.
