Championship promotion hopefuls Brighton have tabled a £2million bid for Blackburn’s Shane Duffy as they look to beat Celtic to his signature, according to a report.
The Scottish Champions have been linked with a move for the Ireland international, according to the Daily Record, with manager Brendan Rodgers keen on signing a centre-back.
The Sun claim in Sunday’s edition (page 63) that Brighton boss Chris Hughton has made the first move in an attempt to beat The Hoops and Wolves in the race to sign Duffy.
Blackburn could be tempted to cash in now on the 24-year-old, with only 12 months remaining on his Ewood Park deal.
Rodgers is also looking at Manchester United centre-back Paddy McNair, after the Daily Star claimed McNair could be sent out on loan in the upcoming season to give him regular first-team action.
Rodgers is facing a centre-back crisis, with Dedryck Boyata struggling for fitness and is likely to miss out on the start of the campaign too. Out-of-contract Charlie Mulgrew, who can also cover the centre-back position, is still mulling over a two-year extension.
However, the former Liverpool manager has formed a reunion with veteran centre-back Kolo Toure filling a void at the heart of his defence.
The centre-back has caught the eye this summer after an impressive display at Euro 2016, helping Ireland progress from the group stages. In the round of 16 though, he was sent off after hauling down Antoine Griezmann,
Duffy, who quit Everton for Rovers two years ago, starred for the Lancashire club in the recently completed season as he made 42 appearances across all competitions.
In other Celtic transfer news, Rodgers believes the addition of Toure will be a good one.
