Aston Villa midfielder Idrissa Gueye will make a switch to Everton within the next 24 hours, according to a report.

ESPN FC claims that sources close to the player state that the Senegal international is undergoing medical tests at the Goodison Park club’s training headquarters.

It is said that Gueye will then put pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Merseysiders and a deal will be sealed by Tuesday for him to become Ronald Koeman’s first major signing of the summer.

Everton triggered the Villa player’s £7.1 million release clause last week after identifying him as a solution to the club’s central midfield problems.

West Ham were linked on Monday with a late bid to prise Gueye from Villa Park but the ESPN report suggests that the bid from the Hammers to hijack Everton’s swoop for the player had failed.

Only former Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kante completed more interceptions than Gueye last season and Koeman has identified him as his first major signing after sealing the capture of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg on a free transfer from Fulham.

It is said Koeman made a swift move for the Villa player in order to fend off any interest from France as the Dutchman builds his squad for the forthcoming Premier League season.

Gueye who is affectionately known as ‘Gana’ by supporters made a £9million switch from France last summer and made 35 appearances for Villa.

In other Everton transfer news, manager Ronald Koeman has lost out as this midfield target opts for another Premier League club.
