Newcastle are tracking two of the Football League’s hottest properties as manager Rafa Benitez looks to add lower-league experience to his side, according to a report.
The former Real Madrid manager has already brought in six new faces on Tyneside as he looks to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
Sunday’s edition of The Sun (page 63) claimed that Benitez is keen to add Sheffield United’s young star Che Adams to his ranks, as well as keeping tabs on Barnsley’s highly-rated captain Alfie Mawson.
The Blades star broke into the first-team last year and scored an impressive 11 goals from attacking midfield. Adams can also play out wide and as a striker himself.
The 20-year-old has two years remaining on his contract but a move to The Magpies could be too tempting to turn down. However, it remains to be seen if he could fire his way past Newcastle’s artillery of Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez.
The centre-back starred in a total of 58 matches across all competitions in the recently completed season, as he helped the club achieve promotion and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. The Tykes are under no pressure to sell though with two years still remaining on his current deal.
In other Newcastle transfer news, Benitez said that he doesn’t have to sell Sissoko, but will listen to £35million offers.
