Liverpool are in the market for a new goalkeeper as Jurgen Klopp targets competition for Simon Mignolet, Football Insider sources understand.

The Belgian is the established Anfield No1 and is now in his third season at the club but there remain doubts among the coaching staff about his distribution and aerial presence.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that Klopp is targeting a proven stopper in the January transfer window who would be able to compete immediately for a first-team spot.

Two goalkeepers on the Merseyside club’s shopping list include Lazio’s Federico Marchetti and AC Milan’s Diego Lopez.

Mignolet returned to the Liverpool team on Boxing Day after a one-match injury absence and performed impressively in their 1-0 win over Leicester.

He was replaced by deputy Adam Bogdan for the 3-0 defeat to Watford the previous weekend, when the 28-year-old made an early blunder and had a nervy display.
