Manchester United are targeting a new wide player in the January window, Football Insider sources understand.
Summer target Sadio Mane of Southampton tops their shopping list, which also includes Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, Lazio’s Felipe Anderson and Newcastle’s Ayoze Perez.
Louis van Gaal has made it clear to the club that one of his priorities is to recruit a mobile wide forward capable of getting in behind defences and creating and scoring goals.
United enquired about Mane last summer but Southampton refused to do business at less than £30million, while Mahrez, who has set the Premier League alight this season, is the target of a number of rivals, including Chelsea.
The Premier League giants have also sent scouts to compile reports on Anderson and Perez.
Juan Mata has started all of United’s 12 Premier League games on the right flank this season, while the likes of Memphis Depay, Ashley Young, newcomer Jesse Lingard and striker Anthony Martial have been used on the left.
Van Gaal has been critical of the one-dimensional nature of the options available to him.
Speaking after Saturday’s 2-0 win over West Brom, the Dutchman said: “I have said already, in my first year many times, we need speed and creativity on the wings.
“You have seen that now we play with Jesse Lingard, and he is not the most speedy winger in the world. Mata is also not the most speedy winger in the world.
“So first we must address that problem and then we can see how we have to play and how we are in balance with playing with speedy wingers.”
