Javier Mascherano slipped in the build up to Atletico Madrid’s only goal against Barcelona on Wednesday evening – and fans took to Twitter to compare the mistake to Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip against Chelsea in 2014.

Atletico took the lead in the fixture through Angel Correa after Mascherano slipped to the floor on the edge of his own penalty area.

The mistake had clear similarities to Gerrard’s untimely slip against Chelsea two years ago.

The Liverpool legend lost his footing inside his own half and presented the ball to Demba Ba who converted nicely to help the Blues to a 2-0 win, ultimately costing the Reds a first Premier League title.

Supporters on social media were quick to mock Gerrard after being reminded of the incident.

Here is a selection of the messages on Twitter:

The match finished  1-1 and left Barcelona in third place in La Liga, three points behind leaders Real Madrid after five matches.

Liverpool supporters will have distanced themselves from the memory of Gerrard’s slip and are already enjoying life under their new manager Jurgen Klopp.

The German has already overseen wins against Leicester, Chelsea and Arsenal this season and his side are currently 6th in the Premier League after picking up 10 points from their first five games.

In other Liverpool news, Michel Vorm is pleased to face the Reds in the last 16 of the EFL Cup but admitted he was hoping to draw rivals Arsenal.
