Robbie Savage believes that Toby Alderweireld should not be considered world-class.

The Wales midfielder was discussing the lack of top defenders in the Premier League and says Manchester City’s John Stones has the biggest potential to reach world-class status.

Alderweirled, 27, is regarded as one of the best defenders in English football and is a part of the league’s best defence at Spurs, conceding just six goals this season.

The centre-back is currently excelling at White Hart Lane and first proved his worth during a loan spell at Southampton from Atletico Madrid.

Pundit Savage believes that Alderweireld is certainly effective at Spurs, but was not prepared to put him in the top bracket of defenders.

“I like Toby Alderweireld at Tottenham – he is probably the most influential member of an excellent defensive unit, but is he world-class?” Savage told the Mirror. “He didn’t look quite up to that standard for Belgium in the Euros.”

Alderweireld has become a firm fan favourite since he arrived at White Hart Lane in 2015.

The Belgian international has forged a commanding partnership alongside compatriot Jan Vertonghen, which is widely regarded as one of the best centre-back combinations in the Premier League.

He has made 59 appearances for Spurs and played a major role in the club’s title challenge last season.

Alderweireld has missed the club’s last five games in all competitions with a knee injury and the north London side have not earned a win in that time.

In other Tottenham news, a report details that the club are close to sealing a defender agreement soon.
