Alexis Sanchez has been ruled out for three more weeks after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Arsene Wenger revealed after Monday night’s Premier League win over Manchester City that the Chilean had been pencilled in to be on the bench for the top-of-the-table clash after missing the previous three matches.
But Sanchez suffered a setback and will play no part in the club’s festive fixture schedule, which includes Premier League matches against Southampton, Bournemouth and Newcastle, as well as the FA Cup third-round match against Sunderland on 9 January.
“He will be back around 10 January,” said Wenger at his post-match media conference. “For the Christmas period, don’t count him. He had a very slight setback.
“He was planned to be on the bench tonight, he was so keen. But he got a little pain so we didn’t take a gamble at all.”
The Chile international initially sustained a hamstring injury in Arsenal’s draw away to Norwich earlier this month.
He missed three matches – which Wenger’s team won – but returned to training last week and the club were hopeful ahead of the match that Sanchez would return for the title showdown against City.
