Paul Scholes has hailed the brilliance of Wayne Rooney after his display against Newcastle on Tuesday night.

Rooney scored twice and assisted once as Manchester United produced one of their best attacking performances of the season in their thrilling 3-3 Premier League draw at St James’ Park.

The United skipper slotted the visitors ahead with a calmly dispatched penalty before his superb reverse pass put Jesse Lingard through to make it 2-0.

Newcastle pulled it back to 2-2 midway through the second period but Rooney appeared to have won the match with one of the goals of the season before Paul Dummett’s last-gasp equaliser.

“United will be the most disappointed team,” Scholes told BT Sport afterwards. “Wayne Rooney was sensational. Everything he did was brilliant.

“For the last two to three weeks he has been on the brink of looking like he is back to the Wayne Rooney we know and love. It’s great to see and let’s hope it carries on.”

Rooney has now scored in United’s last three matches to increase his goal tally for the season to 11, five of which have come in the Premier League.
