James Milner has declared Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson is a “great leader”, after the midfielder was handed the Three Lions armband.
The Liverpool skipper is set to replace Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney in leading Gareth Southgate’s side out in Slovenia, as Rooney drops to the bench.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, former Leeds utility man Milner revealed that Henderson is “fully deserving” of wearing the England armband.
It is amazing and fully deserved,” Milner told Liverpool’s official website. “He is a top player with a top attitude. He is a great captain here (Liverpool).”
“Last year, times were tough for him when he was injured and desperate to be out on the field, but he was a great leader even when he wasn’t playing. He’ll be a great leader for England as well.”
Henderson will be looking to inspire his England teammates as they aim to continue their 100 per cent record in Group F of Europe’s 2018 World Cup qualifying phase.
Wins against Slovakia and Malta have propelled England to the top of the group at this early stage, but losing manager Sam Allardyce has tarnished the Three Lions start.
Interim boss Southgate will be looking to pick up his second win as boss, as he takes charge of his second of four games.
Former Sunderland man Henderson will become England’s 118th captain, joining the likes of David Beckham, Alan Shearer and Bobby Moore. As captain of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, he has an impressive 63 per cent win rate, winning 22 of 35 league and cup encounters.
In other Liverpool news, this former player has slammed the Merseyside giants over his treatment.
