Newcastle winger Christian Atsu has claimed that the Toon’s work ethic was the reason for their Championship triumph against Rotherham.

Ghana international Atsu scored his first goal for the club just before half-time to earn Rafa Benitez’s side a valuable 1-0 victory on Saturday, moving them into third place behind Norwich and Huddersfield.

The Chelsea loanee posted a message on his personal Instagram account after the match, claiming “team work” was the key after Newcastle secured their seventh domestic win of the season.

Atsu secured the win with a superb goal in the 41st minute, cutting inside from his right-wing position before launching an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

Despite the Magpies’ dominance, the score remained 1-0 and the win kept the pressure on league leaders Huddersfield who also got three points after a 1-0 win against Ipswich.

Atsu was one of 12 new signings made by manager Benitez, following the loss of wingers Andros Townsend, Florian Thauvin and Remy Cabella.

A long-term injury to speed merchant Rolando Aarons prompted Benitez to swoop for Atsu, who spent last season on loan at Bournemouth and has two years remaining on his Stamford Bridge deal.

In other Newcastle news, Benitez has given this injury update on another new signing.
