Christian Eriksen has revealed his delight on Instagram after he was given the captain’s armband against Gillingham on Wednesday night.

The Danish international was in fine form as he inspired Spurs to an emphatic 5-0 win over Justin Edinburgh’s League One outfit, scoring two goals including a 25-yard rocket that flew past substitute goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

Eriksen, 24, revealed on his personal Instagram account that it was “very special” to be given the extra responsibility against the Gills, as Vincent Janssen, Josh Onomah and Erik Lamela also got on the scoresheet.

Was very special to be Captain at The Lane yesterday! And scoring 2 goals + thru to the next round!#ce23 #statedrinks #coys

Eriksen got the ball rolling in the 38th minute with a thunderous strike that flew past Nelson from 25 yards. The former Ajax man then doubled Spurs lead by nutmegging the Gills goalkeeper from close range.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side join the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea in the last 16 of the EFL Cup, but face a tough task of qualifying for the quarter finals after being drawn against Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Eriksen has been in impressive form for Spurs this season, playing in all but one of the north London outfit’s fixtures and scoring three times.

Spurs currently sit in third in England’s top flight, two points behind Everton and four behind Manchester City who have made a perfect start to life under Pep Guardiola.

A win away at Middlesbrough on Saturday could claw back Guardiola’s side to just one point, if results go their way.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs have sealed another senior man’s contract after confirming they had agreed terms with Danny Rose.
