Alan Shearer has described Dimitri Payet as the outstanding player at Euro 2016 in the wake of his latest masterclass for France.

The West Ham playmaker scored a second consecutive last-gasp goal for the home nation as they once again left it late before clinching a 2-0 win over minnows Albania on Wednesday night.

Payet had sent France into ecstasy on the opening day of the tournament when he scored a stunning winner to secure a 2-1 triumph over Romania.

His strike against Albania came in added time and followed substitute Antoine Griezmann’s opener just minutes earlier.

Former England and Newcastle striker Shearer was left in no doubt about the effectiveness of the West Ham star man.

Payet is a late bloomer at international level but France manager Didier Deschamps showed his faith in the Hammers star by handing him the No10 role against Albania and demoting star duo Griezmann and Paul Pogba to the substitute’s bench.

France were far from their fluent best but demonstrated perseverance to overcome a dogged Albania team and effectively secure their passage into the knockout stages of the tournament.
