Inter Milan are set to sign Joao Mario after his father claimed Liverpool made a £33million bid, according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol.

Sky Sports transfer expert Solhekol has claimed on his personal Twitter account that Inter Milan are signing the Mario for £38.5million and Santos striker Gabriel Barbosa for £21.4million.

This comes weeks after Mario’s father claimed, as reported by the Liverpool Echo blog (7.12pm) that Jurgen Klopp’s team had offered £33million for the midfielder.

Portuguese publication A Bola reported last month that Liverpool would return with a second bid for the Sporting player, 23, and would face competition from Inter Milan after both teams had bids rejected for Mario.

The Italian club now appear to have won the race for Mario.

Mario played in the final of Euro 2016 as his home country provided an upset by defeating hosts France in extra-time to claim their first every major tournament.

The energetic midfielder was a standout performer for his club last season as his six goals helped Sporting finish second behind rivals Benfica.

The versatile midfielder is highly regarded by Europe’s biggest clubs for his energy and technical qualities in central midfield.

Inter’s second signing Barbosa is one of the striker’s linked with Arsenal in this transfer window and ESPN Brazil reported that Arsene Wenger made a bid for the Brazilian wonderland but no agreement was reached.

Despite Jurgen Klopp missing out on Mario he still has an array of talented midfielders in his squad, including Brazilian Philippe Coutinho who has impressed in the market stages of the season

In other Liverpool transfer news, talks are underway in France as their striker is set to leave the club.
