Newcastle have made an approach to sign Chelsea winger Christian Atsu on loan, according to a reliable journalist.

The  24-year-old is unlikely to feature for Chelsea this season after spending last season at Bournemouth and Malaga in loan spells.

Sky Sports’ north-east correspondent Keith Downie has revealed on his personal Twitter account that the Magpies have enquired after Atsu, who is “one of a number of players” the Championship club are looking at.

According to the Shields Gazette, Atsu is also interesting Serie A side Torino. The former Porto winger signed for Chelsea back in 2013 for £3.5million, but is yet to feature for the West London side in any capacity.

Newcastle’s interest comes after winger Rolando Aarons was ruled out for eight weeks after fracturing a metatarsal against promoted League Two side Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night.

Atsu, who was voted the Best Player of the African Cup of Nations in 2015, made just 12 appearances in total for both Bournemouth and Malaga last term after suffering a stress fracture to his shin.

The 42-time Ghana international has less than two years remaining on his Stamford Bridge contract and according to Downie, is one of a number of options being considered by the Magpies’ boss Rafa Benitez.

Benitez has lost attacking wingers Andros Townsend, Florian Thauvin and Remy Cabella and is resigned to losing Euro 2016 finalist Moussa Sissoko.

Newcastle, who are set to welcome Brighton to Tyneside on Saturday, have won their last two Championship games; beating Reading 4-1 before Dwight Gayle’s fourth goal of the season saw off Bristol City in a 1-0 win.

In other Newcastle transfer news, the Magpies have lined up a £4.5million bid for this Ligue 1 winger.
