Sky Sports pundit Neil Mellor says Loris Karius should start ahead of Simon Mignolet for Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United.

Former Liverpool striker, Mellor said it was clear who Klopp’s first choice keeper was and he should stick by him for the big game on Monday night.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo, Mellor claimed Karius’ absence from internationals was a bonus and could give him the edge.

“The good thing is there’s competition for places, there’s other options and we’re not thin in terms of squad,” wrote Mellor.

“When we’re talking about internationals going all over the world, the back four have stayed at Melwood and there will have been time to work on defending which hasn’t been as successful as some of our attacking play.

“He’ll [Karius] have benefitted learning more with his defenders and working on that understanding so he is fully prepared for the United test.”

“It’s clear that Karius is Jurgen’s number one and while it’s clear he’s still settling into the side and adjusting, hopefully we’ll see a better performance than against Swansea.

Karius made his Premier League debut for the Reds during their 2-1 victory against Swansea and despite a shaky performance, has kept his place in the side.

Former number one,Mignolet has been highly criticised in recent seasons after a number of mistakes have questioned his ability.

The Belgian was absent from Melwood this week as he traveled with his national squad and Karius has been able to train with the defence more as a result.

Mignolet’s been poor at defending set-pieces during his time with Liverpool and Mellor believes it’s something Liverpool need to amend and Karius’ inclusion could help that.

“In terms of goalkeeper, I think you have to be fair to Loris Karius. He’s had two Premier League games and while he might have looked a little unsure against Swansea, it would be hard to make a judgement so quickly,” wrote Mellor.

“We need to be mindful of giving free headers in and around our six-yard penalty area, whether that’s the goalkeeper or the two centre-halves, it needs to be tightened up a little.

“Mignolet will push him but I’d expect Karius to get the nod against United despite Mignolet having more experience.”

In other Liverpool team news, Reds’ fans react on Twitter as former striker is the centre of an embarrassing penalty situation.
