Romelu Lukaku thinks he is bigger than Everton, according to Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith.

The Liverpool Echo claim the 23-year-old is close to signing a new deal with the Toffees as manager Ronald Koeman looks to fend off interested parties in his star man.

However, Smith told Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily Show on Thursday that he believes the Belgium international, 23, is far from the finished article.

“There is something missing from his game,” Smith claimed. “He doesn’t work as hard as other players but he knows where the back of the net is and that is valuable these days.

“I don’t know what it is is. You get the feeling that he thinks he is bigger and better than Everton and fans get the hump about that, which is understandable.”

Former Chelsea ace Lukaku had been reportedly interesting his old side as well as Italian champions Juventus throughout the summer, with interest potentially reignited in January.

But his contract looks set to be concluded at the Toffees, despite this summer’s interest.

Lukaku has been vital for Ronald Koeman’s side this season, scoring nine goals in 17 league and cup encounters. His form has coincided with Everton’s though, with just two goals in his last six games coming in a run of just one win in six games.

Fans will be hoping the former West Brom loanee can reignite his best form against Leicester on Boxing Day, as they travel to the King Power stadium to face the Premier League champions.

If Lukaku fires the Toffees to three points, Everton could climb up the Premier League table into seventh place as they look to replicate the form that saw them win four of their first five games.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are in a three-horse race to sign this Manchester United ace.
