Emre Can should start for Liverpool against Watford on Sunday to help Jordan Henderson defend against Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo, according to Sky Sports pundit Neil Mellor.

Can has started for the Reds in their last three games after being recalled to the side following an injury to Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Germany midfielder has kept his place in the team despite the availability of Wijnaldum for the last two matches, which Liverpool have won with excellent performances against West Brom and Crystal Palace.

Former Liverpool striker Mellor believes Can should keep his place against the Horets to help Henderson stop the ball coming into the strikers.

“Jordan Henderson has been a big player in helping out Lovren and Matip and offering them protection, so too Emre Can when he’s been called upon,” Mellor told the Liverpool Echo.

“That’s why I’d expect Can to keep his place on Sunday to help Jordan stop the balls coming in to Deeney and Ighalo.

“We have done really well in restricting opponents to few chances. Manchester United didn’t have many, neither did West Bromwich Albion, and while Crystal Palace scored twice last week, they didn’t often threaten.

“That’s due to our work at preventing crosses.”

Can, who scored the opener in Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Crystal Palace, has won 50 per cent of headed duels and completed 80 per cent of his passes this season.

Liverpool have not lost in the Premier League since their 2-0 defeat to Burnley on the second weekend of the season, and have the chance to go into the international break at the top of the league.

In other Liverpool team news, the club have made a landmark recruitment decision that Klopp is thrilled about.
