Stan Collymore has been hugely critical of Aston Villa following their 3-1 defeat to Luton in the EFL first-round.

Villa suffered a humiliating cup exit at the hands of League Two side Luton, who pulled off arguably the shock of the first-round.

Pundit and Villa fan Collymore posted several messages on his personal Twitter account expressing his strong views on the club’s progress since relegation to the Championship.

The former Villa player argued that Roberto Di Matteo still needs to get rid of several players from the squad after an alarming defeat.

Roberto Di Matteo made seven changes to his starting 11 from the side that lost in the opening game of the Championship, but the team fared no better against lower league opposition.

Ross McCormack, Jordan Ayew, Nathan Baker and Gary Gardner were the only survivors from the team that suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of the Championship, in which Fernando Forestieri scored a late winner.

It was Ayew who gave Villa an early lead in the first-half against Luton after he reacted first inside the penalty box to score his first goal of the season.

However, a Luton equaliser through Jake Gray before half-time, accompanied by a left-footed shot from Cameron McGeehan after the break gave the underdogs the lead.

Centre-back Jores Okore scored an own goal to pile the misery on the Villa side and Di Matteo will need a drastic change in fortunes after suffering his second loss of the season.

In other Aston Villa team news, McCormack wants to be the club’s main man from set-pieces.
