Manchester City’s £49million record signing caused heads to turn – by showing up for training in a modest £12,000 Smart car.

Super-fast winger Raheem Sterling won’t be quite as quick in the matt black runaround which has only a maximum 900cc engine and a top speed of 96mph.

The England star is normally seen driving a £125,000 Mercedes supercar but was pictured in our image (above) arriving and later driving off from City’s Etihad training campus on Wednesday in a car not entirely in keeping with his status as the most expensive English player ever.

The 21-year-old, who has scored four goals so far this season and helped his team reach the knockout stages of the Champions League on Tuesday, has had trouble with cars in the past.

In August his Mercedes was crashed by a friend while he was at training. Back in February, he was spotted arriving for training in a Range Rover with a parking ticket still attached to it.

Sterling was seen at training driving a Fortwo model Smart car. The rear-wheel drive vehicle boasts acceleration from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds.
