Steve Bruce is in a battle with Hull over goalkeeping coach Gary Walsh, according to a report.

The Sun claim Bruce is keen to bring his former colleague to the Midlands as he steps up his overhaul of the Villa backroom staff.

But it is said that Walsh is currently discussing a new deal with the Tigers and he might be tempted to stay despite Bruce’s interest.

Bruce quit Hull in the summer following a breakdown in his relationship with Tigers vice-chairman Ehab Allam.

Villa axed Roberto di Matteo earlier this month and experienced manager Bruce took control at the Championship heavyweights.

The Italian spent over £50million on new signings in the summer, including £12million on Ross McCormack and £15million on fellow striker Jonathan Kodjia.

Despite the bumper outlay, he won just one game and was given his marching orders during the last international break.

Bruce has had an impressive start at Villa Park, taking seven points out of a possible nine from fixtures against Wolves, Reading and Fulham.

In other Aston Villa transfer news, scouts have been given instructions over a defender move after Bruce’s arrival.
