Crystal Palace’s new signing Christian Benteke has revealed he has held talks with Wilfried Zaha to persuade him to ignore Tottenham interest and remain at the club.
Football Insider revealed on Saturday that Spurs had offered Zaha a double-your-money contract to push through a deal for the winger by Wednesday’s transfer cut-off.
However, Palace remain keen to keep hold of their star man and Palace’s record £30million signing Benteke wants the 23-year-old England international to stay at the club.
“Everyone knows his ability on the ball, he helped us a lot when he came in,” said Benteke to the London Evening Standard. “I spoke with him and I try to convince him to stay, but it’s football.”
Spurs have offered to double Zaha’s wages to £70,000-a-week in an attempt to reach an agreement with the player should Palace cave in to what will be an improved offer to the Sellhurst Park side in the coming days.
The north Londoners are prepared to pay around £20million to land the fleet footed winger, who has left Crystal Palace before in a £15million move to Manchester United in 2013.
He only made four appearances during his time at Old Trafford and he was back with Crystal Palace a year later after an initial loan spell for £3million.
The two-time England international impressed for Alan Pardew’s side last season, scoring five goals and producing seven assists in 43 league and cup encounters.
Tottenham have been in the market for a new winger, with Marseille’s Georges N’Koudou edging closer to a move before Wednesday’s deadline.
In other Tottenham transfer news, Wolfsburg have agreed a fee for Spurs winger Heung-min Son.
