Newcastle fans shared mixed reactions on Twitter after the north-east club confirmed the signing of Ciaran Clark from Aston Villa on Wednesday afternoon.
The Irish defender has put pen to paper on a five-year deal after joining from the Midlands club for an undisclosed fee.
Newcastle have been keen to add a second defender to their squad after the departures of Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini this summer, following the addition of Grant Hanley to the squad last month.
Newcastle confirmed the signing of Clark on Wednesday and the Republic of Ireland international could go straight into the starting line-up on the opening weekend with Hanley reportedly having fitness issues.
The recently relegated club’s fanbase shared mixed emotions with some pleased that the club are adding some depth to their squad, while others were hesitant due to his recent form at Villa.
Clark become’s Newcastle’s eighth summer signing as Rafael Benitez has also added Matz Sels, Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie, Jesus Gamez, Stuart Findlay, Isaac Hayden and Hanley to his new-look Toon side.
The Magpies are also continuing to scour the market and Hull midfielder Mohamed Diame has also been strongly linked with a move to the north east club.
In other Newcastle transfer news, Toon attacking midfielder Moussa Sissoko is not a target for Real Madrid this summer.
