Tony Xia has revealed the details of the motivational speech he gave the Aston Villa players and staff prior to their 3-0 victory over Rotherham on Saturday afternoon.

Villa’s new owner inspired the players with a speech after back-to-back defeats against Sheffield Wednesday and fourth-tier side Luton Town.

As a result the Midlands side picked up their first win of the Championship season and first competitive victory since February.

The owner revealed the reasoning behind his motivational speech as he praised their reaction and performance.

“I wanted to inspire the players and give them some of my advice, based on the many things I have learned,” said Xia as quoted by the Birmingham Mail.

“I was also keen to give them factors that I think you need in order to be successful in all walks of life, not just football.

“I was very pleased they reacted well to this talk – their performance was excellent and I believe the team will only get better.”

According to the Birmingham Mail he spoke about how he recovered from failing at school to becoming a successful businessman.

Here is the club’s official Twitter account showing Xia addressing the first-team squad.

He informed them that they must become leaders in order to succeed as he outlined the five requirements to flourish: hard work, self discipline, team spirit, focus and the ability to learn from failure and success.

Xia purchased the Villa Park club for £75 million in June and appointed Italian Roberto Di Matteo as manager.

The former Champions League winner now has the task in guiding the club back to the Premier League after relegation last term.
