Football Insider chooses three key battles in the Merseyside derby as Liverpool and Everton go head-to-head in the latest clash on Monday evening.
Aaron Lennon v James Milner
The two veterans could battle it out on the wing if Ronald Koeman hands Lennon a start. The 29-year-old started the 2-1 victory against Arsenal on Tuesday evening and he could retain his place in the side due to the pace he offers Everton. On the counter-attack, he could be a dangerous option for the Blues and up against 30-year-old left-back Milner, he might fancy himself in a one-on-one situation.
Romelu Lukaku v Ragnar Klavan
Joel Matip faces a battle to be fit and therefore Liverpool could hand a second successive start to centre-back Klavan. The Estonian is highly experienced but has shown a few nervy moments at times this season. Lukaku has a strong aerial presence and his powerful runs in behind could cause Klavan some problems. It’s likely Lukaku will target the weaker centre-back but Dejan Lovren could also find the Belgian striker a bit of a handful.
Ross Barkley v Emre Can
Adam Lallana will cause Everton all kinds of problems in midfield but at the other end, Barkley could be the man to spark a threat for the Blues. Jordan Henderson and Can will be in charge of keeping the England international quiet but Barkley may be able to exploit Can’s positional weaknesses. The German is ambitious with the ball and can be a threat, driving through the middle, eliminating players. However, he risks leaving gaps in behind and Barkley, when on top form, is excellent at picking up the ball in these pockets of space.
