Tim Sherwood has claimed he recommended Idrissa Gueye to rival clubs this summer.

The former Aston Villa manager signed midfielder Gueye from French side Lil le last summer, but was subsequently sacked after ten games of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign.

Gueye then signed for Everton during the recently concluded summer transfer window, after they activated the £7.1 million release clause in his contract.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday, Sherwood was asked by Chris Kamara, if Gueye would have been one of the players he would have recommended from Villa’s underperformers last term.

“He was one I recommended to quite a few,” Sherwood told Goals on Sunday.

“Just purely his desire and attitude. His ability speaks for itself, but it’s hard for one single player to standout in a poor team and he was one who certainly did that.”

Since Sherwood’s departure last November, the Midlands club went on to suffer their worst season in the top-flight of English football, as they were relegated with only three wins to their name.

Senegal international Gueye was one of a few standout performers for Villa last term, despite being part of group that was heavily criticised for their wretched performances.

Gueye has started all five games for his new club this campaign, helping Ronald Koeman’s side to second in the Premier League table with 13 points.

In other Aston Villa transfer news, the club have been handed a double boost ahead of the Newcastle clash.
