Tottenham fans reacted with panic on Twitter after Toby Alderweireld was left out of the starting XI to face Burnley on Sunday afternoon.

The club’s official Twitter account confirmed Alderweireld was left out of the side due to a “slight back problem.”

Mauricio Pochettino stated he “is not injured” and it was just a “slight problem.”

Alderweireld was absent for two months after picking up a knee injury in the 1-1 draw against West Brom in October but has featured in the last three games for Tottenham.

It came as a shock when he was left out of the starting XI then for Tottenham’s clash against Burnley and Eric Dier was recalled to centre-back alongside Jan Vertonghen.

The 27-year-old wasn’t even named in the squad, which had room for fellow young defenders, Kevin Wimmer, Keiran Trippier and Ben Davies.

Tottenham have struggled to hit top form this season and trail league leaders Chelsea by 13 points, though they could reduce that gap to 10 points with victory over Burnley.

Injuries have already caused several concerns for Pochettino this season, with Harry Kane, Moussa Dembele, Alderweireld and Danny Rose all facing injury absences at some point during the 2016-17 campaign.

Spurs have won just three of their last nine Premier League games but go into Sunday’s clash on the back of a comfortable 3-0 victory against Hull.

In other Tottenham news, this forward was a target of Spurs last season and he could be available in January.
