Toby Alderweireld is set to undergo a Tottenham medical as he prepares to seal a move to the club this week, Football Insider sources understand.
Spurs remain on course to land the Belgium defender, who will fly to London and sign for them in the coming days.
Alderweireld will move to Tottenham in a deal worth £12.8million despite Southampton claims that his club Atletico Madrid will be in breach of contract if they sell him to anyone other than the Saints.
Spurs officials met with their Atletico counterparts in Spain at the weekend and settled on a deal worth an initial £11.4million rising to £12.8million with add-ons.
There was a twist just 24 hours later amid Southampton claims over the cancellation clause in Alderweireld’s contract.
It is understood that the Saints had a £6.8million option to buy Alderweireld inserted in his loan deal last season, but Atletico can cancel that clause for £1.5million and then sell to the highest bidder.
There is now confusion as to whether Atletico missed the deadline to cancel the clause and pay the £1.5million in time.
Nevertheless, Alderweireld will arrive at Tottenham’s Enfield training base to put the finishing touches to his transfer to White Hart Lane. He will undergo medical tests and sign a contract with the club worth £45,000-a-week.
The player favours a move to Spurs despite his impressive loan spell at Southampton last season and he is set to become the London club’s most expensive signing this summer following the deals for right-back Kieran Trippier and centre-back Kevin Wimmer. Football Insider revealed on Saturday that the north Londoners were closing in on the Belgium star.
Southampton know they are unable to sign a player against his wishes but will still push to receive a lucrative compensation package from Atletico. Director Les Reed is set to fly to Spain this week for talks with the Spanish club.
Saints manager Ronald Koeman admitted last week he has been pursuing the versatile defender, who can play at centre-back and right-back.
After holding out for over £10million for the 26-year-old, Atletico agreed a fee with Spurs that could rise to £12.8million.
Alderweireld, a Belgium internaional, has been deemed surplus to requirements by manager Diego Simeone.
