Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has hinted that new signing Tommy Elphick will be handed the captain’s armband for the forthcoming Championship season.

The centre-back arrived at Villa Park earlier on in the summer from Premier League side Bournemouth for a fee of £3 million.

The 28-year-old wore the captain’s armband at his former club as he helped them win promotion to the Premier League in 2014-15 for the first-time in their history.

Xia in recent weeks has been very vocal on his personal Twitter account and has stated that manager Roberto Di Matteo will decide on who has the captaincy, but revealed that his personal view is that Elphick has the qualities to take on that role.

Here is the exchange between a Villa supporter and Xia.

The Midlands club had two captains last season, with Micah Richards wearing the armband on the field and Gabby Agbonlahor the official club captain.

Boyhood Villa fan Agbonlahor gave up the captaincy after he was put on a fitness regime at the back-end of last season which saw him being heavily criticised by supporters for his physical appearance and lack of form.

All this culminated in the club’s relegation into the second-tier which saw Villa fans blame players for their lack of passion and interest while they wore the shirt.

In other Aston Villa team news, the club are close to landing a new senior man at the club.
