Aston Villa owner Tony Xia has joked that Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos will become the club’s first summer signing.

The outspoken Villa Park chief posted a photo of himself posing alongside the 2002 World Cup winner and an Aston Villa jersey on his personal Twitter account on Friday.

The image was accompanied with a caption revealing that Aston Villa had missed out on signing the former Real Madrid star in 1997-98, but that he will be signing for the club this summer.

Carlos, who scored 102 goals from 802 appearances during his professional career, also recently revealed that he ‘came close’ to joining Aston Villa early in his career, but that a deal was never close to being completed.

He said, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail: “I actually came close to joining Aston Villa early in my career. I met with the club but nothing happened.”

Xia’s Twitter revelation is however, of course nothing but a pure tongue-in-cheek message to fans.

Aston Villa may well be considering making further additions to their squad this summer after a busy winter window, but it is safe to say that the retired set-piece specialist, will not be one of them.

Chief executive Keith Wyness has already confirmed that talks have begun for four new signings, but that as many as ten players would first have to quit the club.

In other Aston Villa transfer news, Wyness has made a worrying revelation regarding the future of one of the club’s most prized assets.
